The basic organisational principle of AIL is the autonomy of each provincial Section.
A further general principle we have adopted is that the funds should be spent where they are gathered, for the declared purposes, as accountably as possible. The ends pursued are scientific research, health care and training of personnel. |

Finances GIMEMA (an acronym for “Italian Group for Adult Haematological Diseases”), a non-profit cooperative group comprising over 140 Haematology Centres throughout the whole of Italy, operating with the objective of identifying and publicising the best diagnostic and therapeutic standards for haematological diseases, in order to increase the probability of survival and cure, and to improve the quality of life for patients. GIMEMA is renowned throughout the world, and the results of the research that it has performed have been published in the most important international scientific magazines. |

Provides assistance to patients and their families.

Promotes training and professional updating actions for physicians, biologists, and nursing and laboratory staff. |

Contributes to the costs of hematology and stem cell transplant units. |

Provides “Case AIL ” in the vicinity of the main hematological centres in Italy so that patients arriving from outside a given province can receive assistance from their families during treatment programmes. |

It runs the Home Care and Hospitalization Service which makes it possible to avoid the hospitalization of patients who can be given care in their own home, improving their quality of life and enabling them to fight the disease as best as possible, with the help of their family and their true friends. |

Promotes the Patients Seminars for Limphomas and Myeloma, interactive seminaries for doctors, patients and families. They are promoted in collaboration with the International Myeloma Foundation for Myeloma and Lymphoma Coalition for Lymphomas. |

Provides school in hospital. |

Provides recreation rooms for children. |

Over the last 20 years, following the remarkable results attained by scientific research, the use of increasingly effective forms of therapy – including stem cell transplants and intelligent drugs – have increased the possibility of curing diseases of the blood. But this result in itself is not sufficient: our objective is to increase not only the duration of survival, but also the quality of life and the percentage of cures.
